ADAMA Canada Launches the First and Only Dual-Mode Wild Oat Herbicide for Canadian Wheat Growers
Saskatoon, SK — January 15, 2025 — Today at the Western Canadian Crop Production Show, ADAMA Agricultural Solutions Canada Ltd, a global leader in agricultural innovation, officially announced the launch of CAZADO™, a game-changing dual-mode crop protection solution designed to combat the increasing bane of wild oat herbicide resistance in wheat crops.
Dr. Charles M. Geddes, Ph.D., P.Ag., a Research Scientist specializing in weed ecology and cropping systems with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, underscored the urgency of addressing wild oat herbicide resistance. “Herbicide resistance is a growing problem in Western Canada, particularly with wild oats. Innovative solutions are critical for preserving crop productivity,” Geddes said.
CAZADO™ is the first and only true multi-mode of action graminicide in Canada that simultaneously controls wild oats and herbicide-resistant wild oats. With two full doses of both active ingredients, pinoxaden and thiencarbazone-methyl, CAZADO™ provides unmatched protection for wheat growers.
“CAZADO™ is the result of Canadian ingenuity, developed for and with Canadian farmers,” said Cornie Thiessen, General Manager, ADAMA Canada, “As one of Canada’s fastest growing agricultural companies, we understand the unique challenges facing our farmers, and we’re proud to provide solutions specifically for Western Canada’s agricultural community.”
The launch of CAZADO™ marks a significant milestone in agricultural innovation. Gaël Hili, President and CEO, ADAMA Global, emphasized the company’s resolution to making CAZADO™ available to farmers in Western Canada first, with plans to expand nationally and eventually into international markets such as Turkey, Australia, and Eastern Europe.
“Our Canadian team brought forward a truly groundbreaking idea, sparking innovation that has global implications. Today’s launch reflects our commitment to providing solutions where they’re needed most,” Hili, said. “And it is the result of ADAMA’s ongoing commitment to research and development in Canada that benefits Canadian farmers — representing an investment of more than two million (CAD) annually.”
Developed over seven years of rigorous formulation and chemical refinement in ADAMA’s global research and development complex in Isreal, CAZADO™ is a product of cutting-edge science. Its meticulous quality control included three years of small plot research followed by 2024 product field trials with 44 farmers across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta through the PMRA Research Authorization program.
“Our science and our trials prove that CAZADO™ provides crop safety, unprecedented weed control and reliability in wheat crops,” said Ambrely Ralph, ADAMA Herbicide Portfolio Manager. “As well, its unique active ingredient mixture and formulation, using canola oil instead of petroleum-based products, not only enhances its effectiveness and proactively delays future onset of herbicide resistance but also reduces its environmental impact.”
The efficacy of CAZADO™ has also been confirmed through diverse and robust testing protocols conducted by numerous third-party contract research organizations throughout Canada over the past three years, Rob Bahry, ADAMA Canada Innovation, Research & Development Manager confirmed. "It has been rigorously tested across different growing conditions, looking at different soil types, moisture conditions and other variables to make sure it met the highest standards of performance and reliability for growers."
CEO Cornie Thiessen closed by underscoring the importance of continuous innovation in the fight against herbicide resistance, saying “CAZADO™ is a breakthrough, but it’s not the end of the journey. We remain committed to advancing our knowledge of resistance and our solutions to stay ahead of it to protect the future of Canadian farms.”
CAZADO™ will be available to Western Canadian growers through their preferred retailers in time for 2025 spring wheat application. More product information can be found here: https://simplicity.adama.com/cazado
