About Me

I grew up on a farm, lived and went to NAIT in Edmonton and currently live on an acreage close to Thorsby. My rural background, business experience and life path have given me tons of experience in a variety of different areas. I am very familiar with drilled wells, sewer systems, land types, buildings, and most things associated with rural properties. I have been in business since 1986 and have had excellent training to help you with any commercial needs. After high school I was employed with a lumber company and worked for several construction people so I am very familiar with building practices and methods. There may be things I don't know but I promise you a willingness to find the answers you need using good common sense.

Our family has been in the Thorsby area for three generations and our children are the fourth. This community has been our home and I have been actively involved in making it stronger. Since 1986, I have purchased 4-H animals and supported the 4-H program every year. When I was a member of the Agricultural Society, I helped to secure several grants that allowed us to build a beautiful indoor arena, barns and other equipment. My love for sports led me to compete in baseball, football, hockey and even team roping and other rodeo events. I founded and started the Thorsby Haymakers Rodeo. I was also very involved in minor hockey in Thorsby. Coaching and being on the executive kept me very busy. I applied for and received the first NHLPA goals and dreams grant in Alberta. With provincial government grants and our own fund raising this allowed us to purchase new arena boards and a new Zamboni. In 2013 our arena needed an upgrade once again and I spearheaded a group that took on this task and successfully completed this job. We raised $200,000 with once again the help from our Provincial Government and a $20,000 donation from Kraft Canada when I won their Kraft Hockey Goes On contest. When our sons & daughter moved to Leduc to play on more competitive teams, I followed along coaching PeeWee AA and Bantam AAA. I still volunteer with the Leduc Riggers Hockey Jr B Club coaching and at the same time I am coaching a Jr A Hockey Team in Thorsby. I was very active in organizing The Telus Cup 2012 in Leduc. This National Hockey Canada event was very successful and we were able to donate over $100,000 in profit back to minor hockey in Leduc. For my efforts as a volunteer I was nominated in 2010 for a provincial volunteer recognition award. I was notified by the Minister of Tourism Parks and Recreation that I was one of 4 people chosen annually to receive this award. In October 2010 I was presented the Recreation Volunteer Recognition Award at a ceremony in Jasper. This is something I will always be proud of. Time has passed and I don't compete like I used to but my passion for sports has carried on to my children. Our oldest son Brandon is playing hockey for Devon Barons Senior Hockey Team and is playing fastball in Leduc as well. His fastball team Irma Tigers won 4 Provincial Titles and attended Nationals each year. In 2013 Brandon was selected to Team Alberta and they played in an International Fast Ball Tournament in Saskatoon. In the past he has played hockey with Northern Alberta Allstars and Team Brick of Edmonton. Our youngest son Carson played with the Leduc Riggers and has also competed with Northern Alberta Allstars and Team Brick. Carson played Midget AAA in Leduc and was fortunate to play in a provincial final and also The Telus Cup a National Championship Tournament for Midget AAA. Through our sports we have traveled from Vancouver to Halifax and this association has been great for our family. Our daughter is an athlete as well. She has played girls Bantam AAA won a provincial championship in Leduc, won Edmonton minor Hockey Week with Leduc, and now plays on a Junior A team in Thorsby. She plays fastball as well and was fortunate to play in provincials and the Alberta Summer Games. Kaylyn loves horses and has been Team Roping and Barrel Racing the last few years. Sports has been great for our family, we have made a tremendous group of friends and have memories to last a lifetime.

My wife Sharon teaches playschool in Thorsby and has been involved there for many years. She does an excellent job and loves her work. We can't go very far before someone recognizes "Mrs. Powlik". We have been married since 1988 and have enjoyed watching our family evolve into young adults. Sharon is very active in helping our community and volunteers for many events.

My business experience has been very diverse. I have owned 3 NAPA auto parts stores, one in Thorsby, one in Wetaskiwin and the other in Breton. My association with the auto parts business has been since 1981. I have been a dealer for Radio Shack, Star Choice, Pop Shoppe, Boc Welding Product. Exmark and Husqvarna Lawn and Garden. Each of these lines have have given me more experience to pass on to my real estate clients. When I offer advice it is usually because I have experience in that specific area.
