Episode 240: Passing Down The Family Farm with Clint Fischer

Tracy speaks to Clint Fischer about “Passing Down The Farm" in this week's episode.

In this episode, Tracy speaks to Clint Fischer about all things farm transition planning:

  • For decades, the industry has been educating and pushing succession planning for farmers at events, in articles, etc. Are we making progress as an industry?
  • What are the main reasons/obstacles that keep farmers from starting?
  • Who are the best individuals to hire to help you create your transition plan?
  • When is the best time for Generation 2 to start the transition planning conversation?
  • Clint touches on entitlement.
  • He shares his three-phase approach to transition planning.
  • Should management and ownership transition happen at the same time or in different stages?
  • Clint covers this and so much more.

Is transition planning on the horizon for your farm? If so, you won’t want to miss this episode.

Thanks for tuning in friends,

Tracy

Show Guest

Clint Fischer

Clint Fischer is a South Dakota attorney with a focus on family farm operations. My passion is helping ag people with farm business solutions, succession planning, and estate planning. Through my experiences, I’ve discovered that my two greatest skills are: 1) bringing people together to feel connected, included, and seen; and 2) explaining complex topics in a way that’s easy to understand.

I founded Braintrust Ag as a central hub for valuable information—a place where folks can access the tools I use daily. But the farmers, ranchers, and ag business owners I aimed to help wanted more. They sought connections and learning opportunities with their peers. This led to the evolution of Braintrust Ag into an online peer group, offering all the benefits of the local elevator/gas station coffee crowd without the neighborly competition.

Today, Braintrust Ag connects operators from around the globe. A farmer in Minnesota can now learn what works (and what doesn’t) from a farmer in Canada or Tennessee. We’re tackling the isolation often found in agriculture while sharing ideas to build better farm businesses.

I believe that to preserve family farm legacies, two things are essential:

1. Operations must be well-managed, financially viable, and attractive businesses.
2. Operations must have a written transition plan.

Greatness is found in the agency of others. We rise or fall based on the strength of our peer group. That’s why at Braintrust Ag, you’ll find a welcoming community of business-minded ag folks ready to support each other.
