FP Genetics brings a Western Canadian team approach to supporting growers. With territory managers strategically located in Alberta, East Saskatchewan, West Saskatchewan/Southeast Alberta, and Manitoba, we combine local on-the-ground knowledge with varietal expertise to deliver industry leading support. By leading with deep research insights, we aim to provide Canadian farmers with every potential advantage.
Our territory managers play a crucial role in ensuring each grower finds the optimal variety to match their unique field conditions and regional needs. When challenges arise, we are on hand and committed to support. This approach empowers growers to adapt to changing conditions, maximize yields, and achieve long-term success, season after season.
Superior Wheat Varieties Guiding Success
FP Genetics offers a diverse portfolio of wheat varieties, including top performers like AAC Hockley, AAC Hodge VB, SY Manness, and soon to be launched AAC Walsh for 2027. These varieties are carefully selected to address regional needs and help farmers meet their goals. Additionally, AAC Schrader Durum is a standout option for durum wheat producers seeking high yields and protein. Our varietal expertise ensures that every grower can confidently choose the right seed for their fields.
For example, AAC Hockley, as a semi-dwarf, offers some of the strongest standability and disease resistance available offering superior performance. Meanwhile, AAC Hodge VB provides effective midge tolerance, and is the highest yielding CWRS ever registered. SY Manness combines impressive yield potential with adaptability, thriving in diverse growing conditions, making it an excellent choice for areas prone to heavy moisture. The new AAC Walsh, another semi-dwarf, has a large kernel size and very strong disease resistance, with improvements to grain and flour protein, while AAC Schrader Durum stands out for its first and only ‘I’ for Fusarium Head Blight, and is sought after in durum markets.
Collaborative Problem-Solving with Territory Managers
With constantly changing weather and soil conditions, every season presents new obstacles. This year, for instance, we observed an increase in standability concerns across various crop types, driven by heavy moisture during critical growth stages. In cereals, warm and moist conditions often lead to rapid growth but may also cause weaker stems and shallow roots.
Our territory managers work closely with growers to address these challenges. Recently, in West Saskatchewan and Southeast Alberta, a producer struggling with standability in a traditionally high-yielding wheat field turned to our team for support. Soil testing revealed that nitrogen levels were nearly double the ideal range, contributing to the issue. By assessing soil fertility and adjusting management practices, we significantly improved standability, ensuring better outcomes for current and future crops.
In some cases, challenges stem from uncontrollable adverse conditions. Reviewing historical performance data for specific varieties allows us to identify patterns and develop strategies for future seasons. This data-driven approach enables farmers to fine-tune practices and gain a competitive edge.
Balancing Solutions and Trade-offs
Certain challenges require trade-offs. For example, varietally blended midge-tolerant wheat, such as AAC Hodge VB, has become essential for pest management. While these varieties may come with trade-offs in straw strength, breeders continue to innovate, improving performance with each new release. Our role is to guide growers in understanding these dynamics, helping them make informed decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term benefits.
Transparency Across Regions
One of the strengths of FP Genetics is our ability to connect growers across regions. By sharing insights from one area, we can help more farmers confront similar challenges in their respective areas. Last fall, our Manitoba Territory Manager discovered that growers who harvested peas at higher moisture levels and cleaned them in the fall achieved better germination rates. Sharing this knowledge across our network enhances every grower’s ability to succeed.
Whether recommending appropriate wheat varieties, like AAC Hockley, addressing standability concerns, or brainstorming strategies for overcoming tough seasons, our priority is always the grower’s bottom line.
