Five reasons for fall testing

The more you know

Harvest has arrived early for many growers across the prairies, with many crops stalling out due to hot and dry conditions. In addition to moisture and temperature, which are critical for gauging storage needs, seed should be tested for five important reasons.

1. Baseline of seed quality. Know what condition your seed is in right off the combine. This will allow for storage and marketing decisions to be made in a timely manner.

2. Marketing your crop. Is the seed destined for the elevator or a customer (for our pedigreed seed growers)? Knowing what you have early gives you opportunities when marketing your grain.

3. Storage decisions. Will your crop need a gentler touch to preserve germination? Should it be earmarked for treatment before seeding?

4. Disease or pest management. Knowing what impacted your crop at harvest can give you time to make decisions on crop rotations, treatments, or further testing. When you get one chance to grow it, data matters!

5. Validating agronomic decisions. Was the equipment set correctly? Did the spray product and timing positively or negatively impact the seed quality?

While high yields are undeniably important, it's crucial to remember that seed quality is equally, if not more, significant. Quality seed has far-reaching impacts on storage, marketing, and crop value, making it a top priority for any grower.
