Research Seeking Farmer Input on Environmental Collective Bonus Payments

Reference: Farm Management Canada

Farm Management Canada wishes to share the following information on behalf of Karina Lopez Ivich, PhD Candidate, Institute of the Environment, University of Ottawa.

A new study aims to recruit farmers to interview for a new study to improve understanding new policy options, particularly collective bonus payments, that could provide financial support to farmers and ranchers as incentives to implement eco-based management approaches.

Collective bonus payments (CBPs) are a form of collective incentives that could support and encourage farmers to work together at the landscape level to achieve shared environmental goals – in exchange for an additional payment to all participating farmers in the target region. CBPs provide financial support to groups of producers coordinating efforts to minimize the environmental impacts of their operations, enhance local ecosystems, and improve agricultural productivity and profitability.

The interviews will be used to inform the development of a program and ensure the research is grounded in the reality of farming. Farmers and ranchers participating in this study will help inform how a collective bonus program could best benefit them, what elements would make it attractive, and how it could most effectively support existing producer efforts to protect the environment while improving on-farm efficiency while opening new revenue opportunities for on-farm activities.
