Why are phosphate and sulfur better together?

Research shows that when you apply both phosphate and sulfur in your nutrient management program, you can drive synergy. “When you apply the phosphate and the sulfur together, now you’ve got a yield advantage that you would otherwise not have if you were to skip one of those nutrients,” explains Dr. Karl Wyant, Nutrien Director of Agronomy. “One plus one now equals four.”

We know that conditions that promote phosphate deficiency can also promote sulfur deficiency; acidic soils, low organic matter, coarse textures, too wet or too dry, cold temperatures and low oxygen. “These two nutrients go hand in hand, so when you put them in a balanced nutrient plan, you can see some incredible results in the field,” says Wyant.

The proof is in the field

“What we see in our corn trials across the Midwest over three years and many sites is that MAP alone is giving us on average 189 bushels an acre. With Smart Nutrition™ MAP+MST® driving that phosphate-sulfur synergy, we’re seeing on average 204 bushels an acre,” explains Wyant. This yield jump is a nice payoff for the grower.
